The Life is Strange series of games has strongly featured women as the primary characters for nearly all of their stories and gameplay. This is the first game in the series and a great starting point for beginners. Maxine Caulfield, nicknamed Max, is the main protagonist of the first game.
She is an aspiring photographer that was suddenly granted the ability to rewind time. As such, she manages to build friendships and save the lives of numerous characters throughout the game from meeting terrible ends.
The game has some heavy decision-making implemented, and a storyline with characters you’ll remember for a long time.
2. Nier: Automata – 2B
Full name YoRHa No.2 Type B, 2B is a female android set in the world of Nier: Automata. She is one of three protagonists available in the game and is an android soldier.
She’s tasked with reclaiming the earth that is now overrun with machines from invading aliens. Although labelled as a Battler android, she is actually an Executioner android in disguise.
Throughout the game, we can tell she is riddled with guilt in having to kill her companion once he figures out the truth about the organization they are working with. Nier: Automata is a great game with varying plotlines and endings that you will find intriguing to uncover.
3. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice – Senua
If you were to pick any of the games on this list to play, let it be this one. Experience Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and you’ll come out with Senua a memorable character that will remain in your mind’s eye for a long time.
Senua is a Celtic warrior out on a quest to Viking Hell, Helheim, in order to fight and bring back the soul of her dead lover.
It is a dark fantasy world inspired by Norse mythology and Celtic culture. She faces all sorts of challenges and supernatural entities along her journey to get to Hela which holds her lover captive.
4. The Medium – Marianne
Following the footsteps of Hellblade, The Medium is another psychological horror game centring around a spirit medium named Marianne. Although, this game is more of a puzzler set in post-communist Poland.
Marianne can travel between two worlds and has psychic abilities. These abilities would help her fight against the hostile enemies that threaten her well-being as she bridges the two worlds.
In her journey, she would have to solve puzzles in order to unlock the mystery behind a disturbing recurring dream.
5. Alien: Isolation – Amanda Ripley
Hats off to the sole survivor of the Sevastopol Station Xenomorph infestation. Alien: Isolation is a slow-burn survival horror game inspired by the original Alien movie of the same name.
Amanda Ripley is the daughter of Ellen Ripley which we all have come to know from the original franchise.
She takes after the best qualities of her mother with her resourcefulness and determination.
Her mission is to retrieve a flight recorder in order to uncover what happened to her mother that has been missing for 15 years. To do so, she needs to brace through and escape a Xenomorph-infested ship.
6. Control – Jesse Faden
A game from the titular Remedy Entertainment that served us some classics like Alan Wake and Max Payne, we have Control with Jesse Faden at the helm of it.
Jesse is the head of the Federal Bureau of Control, an agency that deals with supernatural entities.
The issue is, a new and powerful supernatural entity has managed to break through the building and unleashed itself onto the world.
A mix of slow-burn action and adventure as you uncover bits and pieces of the storyline while trying to destroy the supernatural beast before you.
7. Resident Evil 2 – Claire Redfield
An honourary mention would be Jill Valentine from the first Resident Evil, but we’ve decided to go with Claire Redfield since Resident Evil 2 has gotten a remake.
For those of you who have played the first game, Claire Redfield is the sister of Chris Redfield, the first game’s protagonist.
In this second instalment, Claire heads to Raccoon City in search of her brother but gets caught up in a zombie infection with Leon Kennedy, a rookie police officer. Similar to that of the first game, you have to play this game twice in order to fully understand the storyline of the characters.
8. Horizon Zero Dawn – Aloy
Verging on the wilder side, we have Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn. Aloy is a female hunter that was banished from her tribe as a baby. She was taken in by an outsider and raised to survive a harsh apocalyptic world.
When you’re done with this first game, you can even hop into the second game which expands the story and lore of the current world.
She is a strong female lead with a gritty personality of being forthright and blunt in her actions and words. Nevertheless, you’ll get to fight against a cult of AI worshippers and hostile machines as you journey on.
9. Bayonetta – Bayonetta
For those looking for a more fast-paced and action-packed game, Bayonetta is a great option to try out with a strong female lead.
Those of you that enjoyed the Devil May Cry series might find excitement and fun in Bayonetta.
Bayonetta is a witch that rose from the bottom of a lake after 20 years and is now seeking answers to what happened many years ago.
She is a powerful being that takes on all sorts of enemies with combo attacks and crazy weapons alongside her witch abilities. Plus, this is an ongoing series, so you can take your time playing through the three games that are currently out.
10. Tomb Raider – Lara Croft
Lara Croft is one of the original female leads in the gaming world, from days of pixelated graphics to now high-end visuals.
Lara Croft is an amazing archaeologist with a high fitness level and intellect that navigates ruins and all sorts of exotic locations in search of hidden mythical cities.
The franchise started in the 1990s, with the latest game dropping on mobile last February 2023. The games aren’t what they used to be, and we’re hoping for a better Tomb Raider game in the future, but the currently available ones are pretty great and replayable.
For those looking for a more modern take, you can try Rise of The Tomb Raider (2016), but the original 1996 Tomb Raider does remain one of the best out there.
