This method lets you create ultra hidden and unsearchable folders.
All you need to do is
1. Open command prompt.
2. Go to the path where the folder is located. Then use the command, attrib +s +h folderName

note-If your folder has spaces in between like ‘my folder’ thenjust enclose the folder name in double quotes, your command will be attrib +s +h “folderName”

For eg: suppose i want to hide folder named hacks located at D:\ashwin\hacks

This command will turn the folder into hidden, system folder. Since the system folders are invisible and unsearchable, you folder is ultra hidden now.

3. To see the folder again, open command prompt and go to the place where the hidden folder is located, then use the following command,

attrib -s -h folderName

This will remove the hidden and the system attributes from the folder and the folder will be visible again,

Note -This trick works because, by default, the option, Hide Protected Operating System Files is checked. If your folder is still visible after its attributes are changed, then make sure that this option is checked. To see this option, open any folder,
then go to Tools -> Folder Options and select the view tab.

You can add one more layer of protection, by naming the folder to something which looks like windows folder, like cache, system32 etc.

I’ve upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7. This page has worked great for me in the past keeping my private files private from other family members while I was on XP.

But with Windows 7 even though I’ve got the same folder +s & +h, while it is not visible to browsing the files in it ARE STILL SEARCHABLE.

I’ve got Fresh UI for Windows 7. While I can hide a drive from other users it doesn’t prevent someone from using my account if I happen to leave it logged in.

    Ha!
I’ll go you one better. I figured it out on my own. My concern was that if I step away from the computer logged-in one of the kids could do a search. I’m not going to hide drives from myself, because that’s too impractical.

Instead what I did was right click the hidden folder and go to properties. Then in the advance sub-menu I deselected the “Allow files in this folder to be indexed”. Then I went to the Control Panel > Indexing Options, hit the Advance button, and hit “Rebuild”. It takes a little while but it deletes the index history wiping out any file names you don’ t want to appear.

    How’s that for my contribution?

      Dang!
Thought it worked. But now that I’ve tested it again the search is showing things in the hidden folder. Disregard that method. It doesn’t work.

Okay. I think I figured it out now. I took your advise and downloaded a freeware app called “My Lockbox” from CNet. After I installed it, and locked the hidden folder I went back to the index options in the control panel and did another Rebuild. Now things don’t show up in searches.

            Indeed there is.

Well the +s thing doesn’t work for me on Windows 7. And I don’t want to download My Lockbox as I only want to make the folder unsearchable. I don’t need to hide it.

            Any ideas anyone?
